When the latest space shuttle headed for the International Space Station a few weeks ago, a Canadian astronaut was among the team of astronauts playing various roles at blast off.
Astronaut Jeremy Hansen watched the blast-off with the families of the men headed to space, saying it’s important the astronauts in flight do not worry about their families but can concentrate on their job.
In a telephone interview from the Space Centre in Houston, Texas, Astronaut Hansen tells Mary Thomas one of the major roles he sees for space work in the future is learning to provide food in space.
“Right now we’re growing food in Gjoa Haven, in the Canadian Arctic, in a Green House but we’re doing it…you know, it’s great for that community. We’re doing it with the intent of learning to grow food in the Canadian Arctic and expanding and bring benefit to all those communities in Canada. Then we’re going to learn from those communities, those people, and we’re going to take that expertise as we farm on Mars. I think that’s really neat.”
Hansen has his eye on a flight into space, and in fact, he has fond memories of taking gliding lessons at Mountainview.
