A petition from Hastings-Lennox and Addington MP Derek Sloan has gathered over 22,000 signatures so far.
The Conservative MP has sponsored a petition on the House of Commons website that claims the COVID-19 vaccine is “effectively human experimentation,” and questions the safety of the vaccines being developed.
The petition was started by Gisele Baribeau from Dorchester, Ontario and then sought an MP to sponsor it.
Sloan says he has sponsored every single petition he has been asked to so far, unless it is completely against things he stands for.
“My philosophy has always been if I’m getting interest on a topic in the community, or if I’m getting a lot of emails on something, if somebody wants to start a petition, I will typically sponsor it and I’ve done that frankly to every single petition that has been presented to me so far. And frankly, I don’t edit them either. If someone has a question they want to ask, I let it go through.”
Sloan says by sponsoring the petition, it gives people an extra voice to raise concerns in Parliament and the government has 45 sitting days to respond.
He says he has received hundreds of emails with concerns and questions regarding the government’s response to COVID-19 and the vaccine.
“From where I’m sitting, I say sure, you know it gives people a greater voice to be heard. You know, unless an issue is completely against things I stand for, I like to let people have a voice. So it’s not necessarily that it is written in my words or instigated by me, but I’m more than happy to let people bring their concerns forward.”
Sloan says he hopes Gisele gets the answers she is seeking in her petition.
