The Special Investigations Unit is looking into an incident to the west of our area, where a one-year-old boy was killed, his father was seriously hurt and an OPP officer was also badly injured.
It happened in Kawartha Lakes, northwest of Peterborough, with police responding to a call that the father had abducted his son, around 8:45 on Thursday morning.
The SIU’s preliminary investigation says officers located the suspect in a pickup truck, leading to a chase and eventually a crash, with the officer being hit by the truck while standing outside a cruiser.
Following that, three officers ended up firing their guns, with the 33-year-old suspect being hit and airlifted to hospital.
The child was also hit by a gunshot and pronounced dead at the scene.
The SIU has assigned four investigators, two forensics investigators and one crash reconstructionist to the case and the three officers involved have been designated.
