A by-law allowing residents in Prince Edward County to have backyard hens has received final approval.
Council approved the by-law during their regular council meeting on Tuesday night.
The keeping of hens is permitted on lands zoned to permit a single detached dwelling and as an accessory use to nursing homes.
Those living in areas zoned rural residential can have a maximum of 10 hens and those in any other zone are permitted six hens.
The by-law notes roosters are not permitted, the hens must be at least four months old and the selling of eggs, manure or other product derived from the hens is prohibited.
Hen owners must also reside on the property where the hens are kept and tenants must obtain written consent from the property owner to keep backyard hens on the owner’s property.
