A group of approximately 15 protesters gathered outside Bay of Quinte MPP Todd Smith’s office Friday to protest Bill 229.
Specifically, schedule 6 of Bill 229, which deals with conservation authorities. Joanne Belanger, who organized the protest, spoke about their mission.
“It’s partly to let Todd Smith and the Ford government know that there are people that are not happy with the way this legislation has been crafted, but it’s also to raise awareness because I think what happens when you have these bills that contain everything including the kitchen sink, people don’t know.”
Belanger says legislation being pushed provincially could be harmful to the environment. She says Schedule 6 gives land developers a way around the recommendations of conservation authorities.
“We have two locally, the Lower Trent and Quinte Conservation, and we just want them to be able to do their job. They do their job on evidence-based science and they try to make rulings that really are intended to protect our watersheds, our wetlands, our environment, our green spaces and we’re here to say you need to let these people do their job.”
The protest began shortly after noon Friday and went until 2 p.m.
