A Belleville city committee is looking at a retail-retention strategy, including promoting a city-wide pop-up program, similar to the Pop-Ups on the Bay held during the summer months.
At Wednesday’s meeting of the Economic Development and Retention committee, Manager of Economic and Strategic Initiatives Karen Poste presented a report supporting industrial and commercial development that’s supporting new businesses.
Committee Chair Councillor Ryan Williams pointed to the downtown area and the Quinte Mall as possible locations for short-term Pop-Ups.
The idea is that many business locations are vacant now that could be used for short-term rentals for various types of businesses, even gyms.
Councillor Sean Kelly says the retail Pop-Ups will be valuable across the city, particularly in the downtown.
Williams pointed out that when he spoke to Quinte Mall officials they were definitely interested, and they see this as a benefit moving forward.
Development and Tourism Coordinator Elisha Purchase said all options would be on the table beyond retail and could include more unconventional pop-up participants such as gyms.
Councillor Kelly McCaw raised concerns about using taxpayer funds to support the profitability of businesses and said she couldn’t support the proposal.
The committee is also considering creating a database of local retailers helping form a self-directed Retail Advisory Organization or Committee, implementing a long-term “Shop Local” campaign, and working with Belleville retailers to promote local products.
The amended document is expected to go to city council on December 14.
