It was a long night for some Quinte West firefighters, who battled a house fire for more than four hours overnight.
Crews from the Batawa and South Murray fire halls responded around 11:45 p.m. to a call at 625 Murray Street near Wooler Road, where a house was reported to be engulfed in flames.
Reports say four people were inside the home, but got out safely and that the fire was out just before 2:00 a.m. and firefighters were on scene until just after 4:00 a.m. dousing hot spots.
Fire Chief John Whelan says two cats died in the fire, but nobody was injured and damage to the house is estimated around $300,000.
The cause of the blaze has been attributed to careless smoking says Whelan.
