The Wellington Dukes and Trenton Golden Hawks could begin the new Ontario Junior Hockey League season in early January.
In a press release on Thursday, OJHL Commissioner Marty Savoy says the league has been working with teams and local health units to find a “realistic and confident start date”, and that starting the season in early January would allow for a 30-to-36 game season, followed by a “shorter playoff format”, featuring best-of-three series, instead of best-of-seven sets.
The league says its teams have already started the cohort bubbling process where permitted, playing scrimmages and exhibition games, and more information about the return to play will be released in the weeks ahead.
COVID-19 protocols are also being put in place with each team receiving a full PPE package, signage for arenas, touchless thermometers, hand sanitizer and disinfectant fogging machines, to be used in team dressing rooms and other areas as needed.
