A new resort and homes could be coming to Prince Edward County.
Councillors heard a deputation from Eric Harari, the CEO of Bel Air Resorts and Residences and Guillaume Gilbert, the vice-president of Apur Creative on Thursday afternoon during a virtual committee of the whole meeting.
Harari presented a development idea planned for Halfmoon Point.
Harari told council he knows there is a need for a development such as this in Prince Edward County and he has no doubt it will work here.
The development proposes to have 42 homes, 75 pods, one hotel and one health centre and spa.
The area was described as a very beautiful place and an environmentally sensitive area.
Councillor Bill Roberts noted the residents of the municipality have a very strong appreciation for the environment and wildlife and wanted to know how that will be taken into consideration if this development were to go ahead.
Harari says he wants to work with the municipality and the area to make sure they do not destroy it.
After development they will bring the property back and preserve it naturally.
Councillor Stewart Bailey asked if Harari had spoken to residents who live in the area.
Harari replied they had not as they had been working on this concept to present before speaking to those who live in the area.
He noted if council and residents were opposed to this project he wouldn’t go forward with it because he feels both the public and council need to want this development before they go ahead as he “doesn’t want to fight.”
Harari would not own the property until the new year he told councillors.
Four people spoke during the public comment period urging council to deny the application when it does eventually come forward as the area in environmentally significant and the development is incompatible with the area.
A zoning bylaw amendment is proposed by the developer to come forward by mid-November, with an initial submission report following that.
Council accepted the deputation and no decision was made at the meeting.
