A man who prefers to fly under the radar when it comes to his philanthropic efforts is stepping into the spotlight.
Bernie Ouellet was named the 2021 Guardian Angel for the 21st annual Guardian Angel Gala on Thursday afternoon.
Ouellet says he is very honoured and humbled to join a very prestigious group.
“I didn’t expect this. I’ve had involvement all the way through in the City of Belleville, but this was unexpected and it was a real surprise.”
“A Rat Pack Gala” is set to be held on Saturday, June 12, 2021.
Gala chair Liz Lehtinen says they hope it will be held in person and they are hoping for an outside event, which is why it was pushed back from its usual March date to June.
Board Chair Sherry Archer called Ouellet a truly inspiring person as he has supported many organizations in the Quinte region without any fanfare.
He is well known for supporting many organizations that help improve the lives of children.
Ouellet says helping children thrive is very important.
“If you can give these young people a hand, and the help when they need it the most, these young people are vulnerable as you well know, they can step up. I’ve witnessed going to where they are handing out bursaries to young people, some of them who have been in care, and these kids have gone on to do great things, and I think that is important.”
Ouellet has been involved with the United Way Hastings and Prince Edward, YMCA Belleville, Loyalist College Foundation, Trenton Memorial Hospital Foundation, the Rotary Club of Belleville and The Children’s Foundation.
He has also been recognized as the 2007 Business Person of the Year from the Quinte Business Achievement Awards.
The Guardian Angel Gala is The Children’s Foundation’s largest fundraiser. To sponsor, purchase a table, or buy tickets call 613-962-9292.
