The City of Quinte West is marking Waste Reduction Week this week and hoping residents will take some time to clean up litter and reduce the amount of trash they produce.
As part of that the Quinte Trash Bash, which was postponed from the Spring because of the pandemic, will be going ahead this weekend.
Public Health officials have decided that the event, which sees people around the region pick up trash in their neighbourhood, can go ahead with proper social distancing and other protocols in place.
Councillor Terry Cassidy told Monday night’s virtual meeting that he and his family will be out and spoke about the importance of keeping the city clean year round.
“Part of Waste Reduction Week is everybody getting out and affirming their commitment that we’re going to keep our roads clean, not just at Trash Bash, but all through the year. We need to be conscious of keeping our roadsides, our park lands and all of the edges of the city clean and tidy. That represents our natural attraction the best way it can be, nice and clean, and welcoming to everybody who comes to visit.”
Quinte West Councillor Lynda Reid echoed Cassidy’s thoughts and took a moment to thank those residents who help to clean up the city on more than one day a year.
“There a lot of people in the area and we’re very fortunate they take it upon themselves, they don’t wait for a special day. So I’d just like to congratulate them. They know who they are, I see them often in Frankford even and other areas , I’m sure everyone else does in Quinte West so I think them for that and we’ll just put an extra push on on Saturday.”
Anyone taking part is asked to do so in small groups with their immediate household and will be able to pick up Trash Bash equipment like gloves and garbage bags, at various locations throughout Quinte West, Belleville and Prince Edward County.
