Hydro One is making it easy for customers to opt out of Time-of-Use pricing.
Hydro One has launched an online portal to make it easy for those who want to make the switch to tiered pricing.
Research conducted by Innovative Research Group on behalf of the hydro company shows that 64% of electricity customers want the ability to choose their pricing plan.
Vice-President of Marketing Jay Armitage tells Quinte News it’s the first time customers have a choice and it’s “absolutely” an advantage.
Armitage says, “It has everything to do with picking a plan that matches your lifestyle.”
Analysis showed for 45% of customers it made no difference so Armitage says, “It didn’t make sense for them to make the switch.”
Forty-three percent would see a benefit by switching to tiered rate.
She added, “They would see an added benefit of $55 a year….within that 43% there are some customers who would save by as much as $130 a year.”
Customers such as seniors or someone working at home benefit from a flat rate pricing plan.
“…imagining when the schools were closed and much more happening at the home during the middle of the day. Those customers are the customers who would benefit from a flat rate.”
Armitage says it’s different for people who have worked really hard to adjust to the time-of-use pricing plan, and you’re using the majority of electricity in those times.
“…overnight, very early or very late and you’re not at home during the middle of the day, then it makes sense for you to stay on the time of use plan”
The company has provided a calculator on its website to help customers choose which pricing plan best suits their lifestyle.
