About 20 police officers from various departments in Eastern Ontario gathered this morning (Friday) in Belleville’s Market Square.
They were not in regular uniforms but instead decked out in bicycling gear as they were taking part in a regional National Police Memorial Ride to Remember.
The Ride to Remember is an annual event to honour those police and other peace officers who’ve died in the line of duty.
“that’s what this week, these memorial services, and this ride are here for, an opportunity for all of us to come together to remember and honour our fallen heroes, to support their family members, their friends and their colleagues. That’s what brings us here today and that’s why we ride.”
Belleville Mayor Mitch Panciuk and Acting Chief of Police Mike Callaghan both spoke of the importance of police work and the importance of never forgetting those officers who’ve made the ultimate sacrifice.
