The Executive Director of Community Development Council of Quinte says she heard some positive things in today’s throne speech and she also didn’t hear things she had hoped to.
Ruth Ingersoll says when it comes to some of the most vulnerable people in our community, there were a number of things mentioned for them.
“And he used the big word eliminate, chronic homelessness in Canada, high quality child care; making that accessible for all, disability benefits, universal pharmacare program, we love hearing all those things and that’s amazing if that can be done.”
Ingersoll was disappointed to not hear about paid sick leave as well as the CERB coming to an end.
“A piece that I felt was missing, was the fact that they are not going to continue with the CERB benefit and it’s going to EI for people and that’s been a huge concern for us for a while, and suddenly they’re going to have to go to 55% of what they were making before.”
She says she’s not sure why this would be missing when we’re in the middle of a pandemic.
Ingersoll also mentioned she was expecting to see paid sick leave make up part of the plans going forward.
