It appears the message has been heard.
Last week, the family of the late Tyler Maracle began a demonstration site at Tyendinaga Police headquarters on York Road (link to original story below).
Their demand was to reopen the investigation into Maracle’s and his friend Matthew Fairman’s deaths in 2015.
Tyendinaga Police Chief Jason Brant spoke to Quinte News Tuesday morning.
“The Ontario Provincial Police and their provincial liaison team are currently engaging the coroner to see what can be done. To see if a new meeting can be held, if the investigation can be reopened.”
Brant says the OPP Liaison Team’s discussing things with the Coroner’s Office.
“Certainly they have some more evidence they believe has come forward, that will certainly be looked into.”
Brant says a lot of resources need to go into something like this.
“The structure and the direction of who makes the call on the opening and the closing does not lie with the police anywhere. It is no different on the Indigenous Territory, it is still with the coroner’s office.”
