Some long-needed infrastructure work has been approved for a neighbourhood in Belleville’s east end.
During a special meeting on Friday morning, council gave the go-ahead for New Tide Construction to reline watermains from 2nd Street to 6th Street, near Belleville General Hospital, as well as Smith Crescent and part of Henry Street.
City Staff says the cleaning and relining of the watermains, which were mostly installed in the 1950’s, will improve drinking water supply and quality for residents in the area.
The Henry Street watermain was put in in 1919.
Councillor Chris Malette told the virtual meeting that the approval will be welcome news for residents in that area.
The contract is worth just over $645,000, with that money already accounted for in the 2020 capital budget.
The work is scheduled to be finished no later than October 16, 2020.
Council also gave the “OK” to new seasonal pole banners to going up in Belleville Downtown District, thanks to some help from the Rural Economic Development Fund.
Downtown District officials submitted a proposal for the new banners back in February and Council approved an agreement at a special meeting on Friday, to commit just over $2,200 to the project, along with just over $3,000 in RED funding.
The Downtown District will cover the remaining $5,000 of the total cost.
A report from Manager of Economic and Strategic Initiatives Karen Poste says adding the banners will help to improve the appearance and aesthetic in the downtown, which will in-turn, encourage more people to visit there and help drive the local economy.
Mayor Mitch Panciuk says the special meeting was called because of “timeline issues” with both projects, which couldn’t wait until the next regular meeting on September 14, 2020.
