Council in Prince Edward County is helping a local child care centre in Picton to expand.
Councillors voted on Tuesday night during their council meeting at Highline Hall in Wellington unanimously in favour of approving building permits to The Hub Child and Family Care and delaying the collection of the permit fees for up to five years.
The HUB Child and Family Care organization, which remained open during the COVID-19 pandemic, hopes to build a 3,200 square foot addition to its existing 6,400 square foot space in Picton.
HUB Executive Director Susan Quaiff asked council during their July 23 meeting to help the group move ahead on its expansion.
Council also recommended the group apply to the Community Grant Program for $17,281.80 to cover the outstanding development permit fees.
If the application is unsuccessful, the municipality would work with the HUB to develop a payment program allowing the fees to be paid back over five years.
The pandemic caused the organization, like many others, to experience a drop in its revenues and ability to fundraise this year.
The HUB has been in operation for 32 years and is currently the only licensed childcare provider available in the municipality.
