QUINTE WEST, ON: Thursday July 30th – The Trenton Golden Hawks have had a long history of top tier goaltenders at the Duncan McDonald Community Gardens, and once again it is mission accomplished.
Coach/GM Peter Goulet is excited to announce that William Nguyen (pronounced: new-yin) will join Oliver Troop between the pipes for the 2020-21 season.
Nguyen was a standout with the Embrun Panthers of the EOJHL (formerly CCHL2 – Jr B). By the numbers, Nguyen was heads and tails above the rest of the pack. Nguyen had the best Goals Against Average (2.06), Best Save Percentage (943 %), CCHL2 1st Team All Star, and the CCHL2 Top Goaltender Award. In just two games for the CCHL’s Nepean Raiders in 2019-20, he had a 0.71 GAA & a 987 SP%.
Nguyen is 6.0’/212 pounds and is a 2nd round draft pick of the North Bay Battalion (U-18 Selection), and a 2nd round pick of the Nepean Raiders in the 2017 CCHL draft.
He says, “Once my year finished with Embrun (2019-20), I was looking for a place to play next year (2020-21). I had just finished Grade 12 and I received a call from Mr. Goulet. He talked to me about what Trenton could offer. The program is nationally recognized, I am excited to be a part of a winning franchise. Coach Goulet came to visit my family and I on two separate occasions. “
Nguyen adds, “It is important that I grow as a person, grow in my education, and grow as an athlete. It is vital that I make a life for myself outside of my own home. My goal is to get a Division 1 offer (NCAA). I would like to get as many as possible. I really enjoy the academic part of being a student-athlete. The NCAA would be a great way for me to find a balance. “
“My family and I agree that this is a good step for me. It is important that I start getting used to living on my own, and not rely on being at home. My family is supportive of the decision, the community, and the program,” he added.
When asked what he brings to the GHawks, the Ottawa native says, “I am a goaltender who enjoys playing, and wants to have fun. I look at someone like Marc-Andre Fleury, who even in serious situations is relaxed, and enjoys playing. It is important for me to have good and open communication with my teammates. I do not know anyone in the program, so it is going to be an all new experience, and I am excited to get started. ”
Coach Goulet says, “His statistics precede him. His year in Junior B was unbelievable. I watched several of his games, and I really like what he brings to the table. Will is going to be a high impact player and is a D1 (NCAA) calibre athlete. He is a phenomenal young man and is going to make the team better. “
