The Trenton Memorial Hospital Foundation’s latest donation started with one man, a wooden spoon and a pot.
Duncan Armstrong, a Trenton resident, created a group that for 125 consecutive days stood out each night in the neighbourhood to make noise for front line workers. Armstrong says the call came from the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario at the start of the pandemic to make noise to support those risking their safety to combat the virus.
He says once he started, more people began to join and it blossomed from there.
The group evolved as more people got involved. They began touring the city to make noise for people in long term care homes and front line workers.
A portion of the group began sewing homemade reusable face masks. Instead of charging people for masks, they asked for a donation to buy more material to sew more masks. The community came through tenfold. In total they estimate they produced approximately 20,000 masks for the community. The result was a surplus of donation money, which in turn was donated to the Trenton Memorial Hospital Foundation.
The foundation’s CEO Wendy Warner highlighted the importance of the work done by the group.
They celebrated their hard work Tuesday night by hosting a driveway concert featuring local band The Reasons, officially presenting the donation and taking a moment to recognize everyone for their part in the bigger picture.
