It seems there’s a new twist to the old Canada Revenue Agency phone scam.
People are called from someone claiming to be with the Canada Revenue Agency and threatened with arrest if they don’t come up with some significant amount of what are called back taxes.
The new wrinkle in the scam is that the scammer’s phone number appears legitimate.
In a case where a Belleville resident was defrauded of one thousand dollars the number shown was that of the Belleville Police Service emergency line.
Belleville police warn that if anyone demands payment using gift cards it is most likely a scam and that police or the Canada Revenue Agency do not phone people regarding overdue payments.
