A 52-year-old Belleville man is lucky to be alive after a family member wrestled a shotgun away from him in the southwest part of Belleville early this (Thursday) morning.
Police responded to the residence at 1:30 after a shot was accidentally fired into a wall during the efforts to take the gun away from a man who was attempting to harm himself.
When police arrived the man surrendered the gun peacefully. Hastings Quinte paramedics were also on scene but there were no injuries.
The man was taken to Belleville General Hospital and arrested under the Ontario Mental Health Act.
