The future of a controversial statue in Prince Edward County is up for discussion.
The Prince Edward Heritage Advisory Committee is going to lead a public discussion about the future of the Sir John A. Macdonald statue that is featured predominantly in downtown Picton.
County CAO Marcia Wallace has asked the group to develop recommendations and provide advice to council as it relates to the statue of Canada’s first Prime Minister.
In recent years, community members have called for the removal of the statue citing Macdonald’s mistreatment of Indigenous Peoples and his role in establishing the residential school system.
Chair Ken Dewar says determining the future of the statue in our community will not be an easy conversation but he believes residents can have a constructive deliberation that respects all viewpoints.
A report from the working group is expected to go to council for consideration this fall.
