Improper equipment and a lack of training are being blamed for damage to a plane at CFB Trenton, routinely used by the Prime Minister, Governor General and other dignitaries.
On October 18 last year, a CC-150 Polaris was being towed from the north ramp at 8 Wing to 10 Hangar at the base, a hanger which is not routinely used for that plane.
The ground crew had to swap the towing tractor, so they installed chocks, set the parking brake and disconnected from the aircraft.
During the change, the plane began moving forward and jumped the chocks, with the right engine slamming into the tow tractor, before the plane’s nose hit the hangar wall.
Serious damage was reported to the plane and one person was injured.
The investigation did not determine why the parking brake failed and notes the chocks were not authorized, and the brakeman training with the ground crew was not up to code.
The plane still has not been brought back into use.
