The Band Council for the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte hope that Hastings County can help make a long term care home on the territory a reality.
Hastings County council’s Finance Committee saw a letter from Mohawk Chief R. Don Maracle at its virtual meeting yesterday (Tuesday) asking for the county’s help to build a 128-bed seniors home.
The province has already approved a long term care licence for the territory and the home would be open to everyone, not just First Nations people.
The estimated cost is close to $30 million but the band already has about $20 million set aside and is looking for other funding sources.
Hastings County council will discuss the request as part of the 2021 budget process.
