The Belleville Police Service responded to 74 calls from June 15, 2020 at 5 a.m. to June 16, 2020 at 5 a.m.
Phone scams continue
Belleville Police continue to receive complaints regarding phone scams where people are told that they have arrest warrants in their name, and that they have to pay a sum of money to the caller who identifies himself as an “officer” in order to clear their name. Two such calls resulted in the victims transferring $1000 each to the unknown scammers. Recently, police have received information that the scammers have been disguising their phones numbers using local phone number combinations in order to appear legitimate. Police are reminding everyone that they do not contact people to exchange money in return for clearing up warrants, and should you receive such a call, or any similar type call, please report it to Belleville Police.
Arrested on warrants
On June 15, 2020, at 6:20 p.m., police were patrolling the parking lot of a North Front Street hotel when they observed a male known to them to be wanted. The male, identified as 36-year-old Brad Jeffrey of Belleville, was stopped and arrested on his outstanding warrants. Jeffrey was later released with a court date on August 20 to answer to charges of break and enter, theft, and several counts of failing to comply with probation.
Three day licence suspension
On June 15, 2020, at 9:05 p.m., police received several calls regarding an erratic driver on North Front Street. Police were advised that the driver had backed up into someone in a drive through line and fled the area. The vehicle was stopped on Bell Boulevard, and police identified the 23-year-old male driver from Belleville. Police conducted a Standard Field Sobriety Test on the male. As a result, the driver was issued a 3-day licence suspension, and he was charged with careless driving.
