A pilot project brewery, planned for a farm property on Mitchell Road in Belleville’s Thurlow Ward, has raised some concerns.
At Monday’s virtual meeting of the Planning Advisory Committee, owner of the property at 464 Mitchell Road, Shawne Milne, told the committee he hopes a brewery would increase the value of the property.
Milne predicted the brewery wouldn’t use as much water as the cattle on the land used to use.
Councillor Bill Sandison expressed concern about the water supply, noting the area has changed in the past 154 years and one resident has to have water brought in because of water issues.
Area resident Annette Padden wrote two letters to the committee, expressing concerns.
In one letter, she points to these concerns, “Further to our enquiry re By-law B-77-1106 we wish to express major concerns regarding the Environmental impact on the surrounding residential community, reasons as listed below. This is not an exhaustive list of our concerns. With Environmental concerns including water consumption, wastewater, solid waste and by-products, energy and air emissions we assume such an operation is highly dangerous for residents and drilled wells alike.”
Committee member Kathryn Brown expressed concern about the traffic impacts of a brewery on Mitchell Road.
Brown questioned if it would turn a “residential road” into something more.
Councillor Ryan Williams pointed out this would be part of a “growing craft brewing industry” in the Quinte area.
