It was a busy 24 hours for the Belleville Police Service who responded to 71 calls for service from Friday, May 29 at 5 a.m. to Saturday, May 30 at 5 a.m.
Business Parking Lot Disturbance
On May 29, 2020 at approximately 10 a.m., city police attended the parking lot of Canadian Tire on Bell Blvd. in regards to a man and a woman causing some sort of a disturbance. The investigation revealed that there were no grounds for any criminal charges to be laid. However, both the man and woman involved were barred from the business for one year and were escorted off the property by the police.
Warrants
Also on May 29, 2020 at approximately 2 p.m., city police arrested a 55-year-old Belleville man on an outstanding warrant stemming from an investigation that began on May 27. The accused is charged with two counts of Failing to Comply with Conditions of an Undertaking.
The suspect was held in custody at the Belleville Police Service and is scheduled to appear before a Justice for a show cause hearing on May 30, 2020.
Flight from Police & Breach of Conditions
Meanwhile at approximately 1:45 p.m. on May 29, 2020, a city police officer says they observed a motor vehicle blow through a red light on North Front Street. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver took off from police.
City police pursued the suspect vehicle for a short distance until the suspect vehicle pulled into the parking lot of a hotel at the top end of North Front Street at which time the officer took the driver into custody. An investigation revealed that the driver identified as 37-year-old Shawn Balla from Kingston was in breach of court ordered conditions.
Mr. Balla was charged with the following offences;
- 2 counts of Fail to Comply with a Release Order
- Failing to Stop for Police
- Failing to Stop at a Red Light
- Use Plate Not Authorized for Vehicle
- Driving While Under Suspension
The accused was released on his own recognizance and is scheduled to attend the Belleville Ontario Court of Justice on August 20, 2020 to answer to the charges.
Youth Complaint
On May 29, 2020 at approximately 4:30 p.m., police dispatch received a call about three young men attempting to break into vehicles that were parked at a hotel on North Front Street. Police attended the scene but the men took off prior to police arrival. Officers collected witness information and descriptions of the accused. Approximately thirty minutes later, police observed the three men described near the rear entrance of McDonald’s. All three were taken into custody.
The investigation revealed that no items were taken out of any of the parked vehicles and there was no damage reported. All three were taken home by the police and officers spoke to all of the parents. No charges were laid.
Traffic Enforcement – Suspension
On May 29, 2020 at approximately 6:30 p.m., a city police officer conducted a traffic stop on Herchimer Avenue. The traffic investigation revealed that the driver was a suspended driver in the province of Ontario.
The 21-year-old female driver from Belleville was charged under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario for Driving While Under Suspension. The vehicle was towed from the scene.
Threats & Trespass
On May 29, 2020 at approximately 7:30 p.m., city police received a call from a north end business advising that there was a man threatening the store manager outside in the parking lot. Officers on scene determined there were no grounds to lay a criminal charge, however did charge the 28-year-old Belleville man with Engaging in Prohibited Activity on Premise contrary to the Ontario Trespass to Property Act. The accused was escorted off the business property by police.
Disturbance at Hotel
On May 29, 2020 around 10 p.m., city police dispatch received a call from a woman who was claiming that she was locked in a hotel room and held captive by a male and was being drugged. During the complainant’s phone call, the call was dropped on the complainant’s end. City police officers expedited to the north end hotel. Dispatched received a second call from the same female who now advised that she was in medical distress.
Numerous officers arrived on scene to find the victim’s hotel room door barricaded from the inside. Officers had to breach the door to gain access. Once inside, officers found a lone female in the hotel room. The investigation revealed that the female may have been suffering from some mental health issues and had consumed some illicit narcotics that caused her to be somewhat delusional. Officers assisted the victim out to the lobby where city EMS was waiting. The victim was taken to Quinte Health Care to be treated and receive care.
Utter Threats – Warrant
On May 29, 2020 at 11:15 p.m., city police were on Sidney Street when they located a man who was known to police to have an outstanding warrant for his arrest. Officers arrested 23-year-old Schuyler Simpson of Belleville on the outstanding warrant.
Simpson is charged with one count of Uttering a Death Threat. The accused was released on his own recognizance and is scheduled to attend the Belleville Ontario Court of Justice on July 23 to answer to his charge.
Mischief Under $5,000
On May 29, 2020 at 11:30 p.m., city police attended a disturbance at a North Park Street housing complex. Just prior to police arrival, the caller advised police that her daughter’s boyfriend just smashed and caused considerable damage to the complainant’s parked vehicle.
Thirty-two-year-old Dustin Wannamaker of Belleville was charged with one count of Mischief Under $5,000 and is scheduled to attend the Belleville Ontario Court of Justice on July 23 to answer to the charge.
Warrants
on May 30 at approximately 2 a.m., city police officers were patrolling on Dunbar Street when they observed a man known to have an outstanding warrant. Officers approached the suspect and took him into custody without incident.
Twenty-five-year-old Cameron Vail of Belleville was charged with two counts of Fail to Comply with a Court Order Release Condition. Vail was released on his own recognizance and is scheduled to attend the Belleville Ontario Court of Justice on July 23 to answer to his charges.
