Belleville Senators forward Josh Norris has capped off his impressive rookie season in the American Hockey League with one more major league award.
Norris has been named the winner of the Red Garrett Award as the league’s outstanding rookie, after tallying 61 points in 56 games and finishing third in the overall scoring race.
That’s the highest scoring race finish by a rookie since Cory Conacher placed second in 2011-12.
Norris tells Quinte News the award is a testament to the work he and his Belleville teammates were able to put in this year.
He says the award means a bit more since it’s not just based on stats, but on votes from AHL players, coaches and media.
Norris also had a 13-game scoring streak running from December 20, 2019 through to January 15, 2020, which matched the longest by an AHL rookie since 2005.
The 21 year-old from Oxford, Michigan had already earned recognition on the AHL’s First All-Star Team and All-Rookie Team, for his accomplishments as well.
He was acquired by Ottawa in a trade with San Jose in 2018, which sent star defenceman Erik Karlsson to the Sharks.
