It’s only been four weeks since the Belleville Downtown District launched its online marketplace, but the local e-commerce platform is already being dubbed a success.
The Downtown District Marketplace has brought in more than $22,000 in revenue for local businesses, which goes directly to things like rent, utilities and other bills.
With 30 businesses and more than 1,000 products on the site, Downtown District Executive Director Marijo Currier says the web portal is exceeding expectations.
Currier says they’re expecting to have close to 50 businesses on the marketplace at its peak.
She adds, the platform wouldn’t be possible without both business owners and residents buying in.
And she says she expects the platform to be an integral part of downtown business operations moving forward, with many shops making more use of e-commerce, because of implemented changes due to COVID-19.
Currier also noted that presentations on the Downtown Marketplace, made to various groups across Canada, have been extremely well received and similar projects will start popping up in communities across the country.
