The boating season in East Region is off to a tragic start and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is urging everyone to take action to reduce the risks.
Police say two people died in eastern Ontario last weekend in separate incidents after their boats, a kayak and a canoe, capsized. In both cases the victims were not wearing a life jacket or personal flotation device (PFD).
The water is still very cold and even strong swimmers may be unable to cope with the cold water shock and may lose muscle control very quickly.
The OPP ask you to:
- Always wear a life jacket, it will significantly increase your chance of surviving the cold water
- Share your plans and a timeline with someone you trust
- Check the weather before you go out
- Ensure that you have the necessary safety equipment on board
OPP Marine Units have already begun patrols and will be checking on those who venture out on the water. Boaters should also be aware than many boat launches are currently closed. Please check with municipalities or site owners to ensure you are not trespassing.
