Council in Prince Edward County won’t be allowing garage or yard sales during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Councillors during a virtual special meeting voted in favour of regulating the selling of goods, wares and merchandise in the county while emergency measures are in place.
Chief Building Officer Andy Harrison told those in attendance, by-law officers will be looking for those with tables set up and multiple household items for sale, not those who may leave a snowblower at the end of their driveway.
CAO Marcia Wallace said the reason behind this motion coming forward was also because of the ban on gatherings of more than five people.
The motion carried with Councillor Phil Prinzen being the lone dissenting vote. He says he understands the logic and philosophy behind the try but felt they were ‘babysitting’ and adding another layer to this pandemic.
Prinzen stated if he was worried about contracting COVID-19 he wouldn’t be holding a yard sale and he certainly wouldn’t be going to a yard sale either.
Meanwhile, the City of Belleville will follow suit with Prince Edward County and says it will not be issuing yard sale permits while the COVID-19 pandemic continues.
