There is some good news when it comes to water levels and the potential for serious flooding on Lake Ontario.
The International Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River Board says the latest models show that while the lake levels are still higher than normal, they are expected to peak well below the record highs we saw in 2017 and 2019.
The Board says the decision to push outflows beyond the limits of Plan 2014 was one of the main reasons for the drop, along with “plenty of help from mother nature” and the early peaking of the Ottawa River system, compared to those years of heavy flooding.
It says the conditions this year have allowed the lake to rise more gradually, making it easier to monitor water levels and make changes that were needed.
With that in mind, shoreline communities and property owners are still being urged not to let their guards down because while the current forecast looks encouraging, there is no predicting what the weather will bring moving forward.
