Council in Prince Edward County will be discussing some changes to the County’s taxi cab by-law tonight (Wednesday).
Chief Building Official Andy Harrison states in the report that owners have suggested without an increase in the rates, they may not be able to continue operating.
The current rates have not been adjusted since June 2006.
The County has very limited transit options and taxis are heavily relied upon.
All fares within Picton would increase to $10, while fares to within two kms of Picton would be $12. All other locations would be $1.80 a kilometre.
Other changes would see licence renewals changed from September to March. This would allow for the processing of applications for licences during a less active time of the year for by-law officers.
The mechanical fitness certificate would also only be needed on an annual basis at the time of renewal, instead of semi-annually; reducing operator costs.
Also, applications for new or renewal licences for owners and operators must now include a criminal record check and a vulnerable sector screening.
Council meets at 7 p.m.
