The Special Investigations Unit has cleared Quinte West OPP of any wrongdoing after a 34-year-old man broke his hand last month.
The man had been arrested on the Dixon Drive Bridge for being intoxicated in public and was brought to the Quinte West OPP detachment where investigators say he became combative with officers and was put in a holding cell, where police say he punched the plexiglass portion of the cell door.
He was then taken to hospital and diagnosed with a fractured hand.
SIU investigators say after reviewing security camera footage it’s clear the man’s injury came from that punch to the door, so “there is no criminal liability of any police officer” and “the file is closed”.
The man had been charged with resisting arrest, assaulting police and uttering threats, along with the initial charge of public intoxication.
