The provincial government announced yesterday that it would order the closure of all at-risk workplaces to slow the spread of COVID-19. Essential businesses are allowed to continue to operate with measures in place to safeguard the well-being of their employees on the front-lines.
In light of the announcement, Mayor Steve Ferguson, on behalf of the entire Council, has issued the following statement:
“I implore all operators of roofed accommodations – hotels and motels, bed and breakfast establishments, and short-term accommodations – to cancel all bookings from today until the May long weekend, if you have not done so already. I encourage you to consider offering your vacant accommodations to doctors, nurses, and other front-line health-care workers who want to self-isolate to protect their families.
“Now is the time to discourage all non-essential travel in our community. Together, we must take responsibility to do everything in our power to “flatten the curve.” Your cooperation is necessary and vital especially considering that Prince Edward County has a higher percentage of people over the age of 65, the demographic most at risk of getting very sick if they contract the virus.
“We all must do our part to get through this crisis. If you have returned from travel outside of Canada or if you travelled domestically through one of four airports in Canada accepting international arrivals, you MUST self-isolate immediately for 14 days. And if you are living with someone or picked someone up from the airport who falls into the above category, please self-isolate for 14 days as well.
For all others, practice social distancing and wash your hands thoroughly and frequently and use sanitizer. Remember: stay your distance; stay well.”
