Chief R. Don Maracle has declared a state of emergency on the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory.
The notice posted to Twitter states “the Tyendinaga Mohawk Council has a duty to protect their membership and they have determined they do not have enough supplies in the community to combat the spread of COVID-19”.
The declaration is effective immediately and in effect until further notice.
Maracle is asking members to self-isolate, remain at home and avoid all unnecessary travel outside of the community.
All administrative offices, Community Wellbeing Centre, Quinte Mohawk School, library education programs and Community Centre closed at noon today (Tuesday).
Essential services will remain in place.
