Farnham Road reconstruction
Belleville’s mayor says the city must undertake some major road work n the Farnham Road area, now that a major subdivision development has been approved for the area.
Mayor Mitch Panciuk indicated at council this week the work will be extended further along than originally planned, going on Farnham right to Scott Drive.
Panciuk tells Quinte News that now the GCL Development’s subdivision has been approved, with a possible 367 housing units, there will be more traffic in the area.
It is expected that construction could start after a couple of years of planning and obtaining environmental assessment.
The work would include water and sanitary services, reconstruction of the roadway and sidewalks.
Herchimer Avenue CP Rail crossing
Now that Belleville has a funding agreement for the CP rail crossing improvement on Herchimer Avenue, the $4.2 million street reconstruction project will go ahead.
As part of the major reconstruction of Herchimer, from Dundas Street East to Keegan Parkway, improvements at the rail crossing will include removing one set of tracks, and reconstructing the crossing surface on the other set.
There will also be improvements to the warning system – gates, lights and bells, to accommodate the addition of a multi-use path along that stretch of Herchimer.
This project’s estimated cost is $531,601, with Transport Canada paying 50%, Belleville paying 35% and CP Rail paying 15%.
Rotary Loves Trees
Belleville will be going “green” in a big way as the “Rotary Loves Trees” program gets underway.
Tim McKinney of Belleville Rotary Club outlined the program at city council this week.
He indicated the plan is to eventually plant the city’s population, 50,000 trees, as part of the club’s 100th birthday celebrations.
McKinney says, to start, 1,500 trees will be planted at East Zwick’s Park on April 25.
He said the idea is to get the public involved in the planting program as well.
