Questions were raised about the recent purchase of a controversial strip of land off Farnham Road by the City of Belleville Monday.
The city paid the owner of 427 Farnham Road, next to the new roundabout, $400,000 which was double what the owner had paid for the land.
In a long, drawn out process, city council had rejected that owner’s plans for a small housing development consisting of a few semi-detached homes.
Neighbouring residents had steadfastly objected to the development, mostly for safety reasons.
The owner then appealed to the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal and council decided to buy the property at that point.
At a Planning Advisory Committee meeting tonight (Monday), public member Paul Jennings asked why the city bought the land.
Mayor Mitch Panciuk said that hopefully soon an announcement would be made about the future use of the property which would satisfy everyone’s concerns.
