A pair of game one’s in the Ontario Junior Hockey League went to Quinte region teams Friday night.
In the County, the Wellington Dukes played a perfect game in a 3-0 win to take a 1-0 series lead over the Cobourg Cougars.
James White got the Dukes on the board near the midway mark of the second period, finally solving Cougar netminder Dershawn Stewart who faced 44 shots in the game.
In the third period, the Dukes added onto their lead with a pair of goals from former Cougars Jacob Breckles and Brodie McDougall.
Matt Dunsmoor was perfect in net for Wellington stopping all 16 shots he faced.
Game two will go on Sunday at 5 p.m. in Wellington.
In other action the Trenton Golden Hawks scraped by the Whitby Fury 5-4 in overtime to take game one of their Buckland Cup south-east quarter final.
The G-Hawks fell behind 2-0 in the early going before battling back to take a 4-3 lead after two periods.
The Fury tied the game up midway through the third to force overtime.
In the extra frame Andrew Suriyuth was the overtime hero, picking up his second goal of the contest.
Adam Kim and Dalton Bancroft joined in on the Trenton attack with a goal and two assists apiece. Matt Nastasiuk also scored for the Hawks.
Anand Oberoi made 27 saves on 31 shots in net for the victory. Trenton fired a whopping 77 shots on Whitby goaltender Curtis MacKenzie who made 72 saves to keep the game alive for the Fury.
The Golden Hawks and Fury will battle it out again on Sunday in Whitby at 2 p.m.
The winner of both series will square off in the second round.
