Once a month, members of the Hastings County Law Association gives back to the community and this Saturday they are celebrating their first anniversary.
Ruth Roberts, a criminal defence attorney, says she was looking for a way to do more direct community outreach and decided with some help that serving lunch at the Salvation Army once a month was an ideal way to do that.
Now, they have a dedicated group of volunteers. Roberts couldn’t provide exact numbers but said they probably have 100 different people who give up their Saturdays for the Brunch Bunch.
To date, they’ve served well over 1,000 hot meals according to Roberts.
They provide a warm meal and fresh fruit is a staple. Roberts says they also give away things like socks when they can.
Roberts says it is a great group of people to work with.
The group is self-funded and includes members of the legal community such as justices, police officers, probation officers, court staff and more.
This weekend’s brunch includes pancakes, ham and cheese casseroles, fresh fruit, and a vegan corn chowder.
There will also be a cake to celebrate their 12th meal.
Lunch will begin at 11:30 at the Salvation Army on Pinnacle Street.
Leftovers are left for the Warm Room or meals for the week.
The group also works with the Grace Inn Shelter to make sure everyone who needs a hot meal gets one.
Roberts says they now have a number of regulars and says the response from the public has been wonderful.
She says it’s important they go out and do this because they want to provide something special to the community.
