A building that holds many memories for people who grew up in a part of the west end Belleville is being torn down.
Wrecking crews are working to demolish Sir Mackenzie Bowell School on Leland Avenue.
The building and almost 10 acres of property was purchased by a Toronto area developer six years ago after the Hastings Prince Edward School Board declared the school surplus to its needs.
It has been vacant since then and the building’s condition has deteriorated.
The property owners have not yet decided on an exact development plan for the property but various residential types are being considered.
Sir Mackenzie Bowell School was built in the 1960s and was an elementary school.
