Prince Edward County OPP are again warning people to be very cautious when heading out onto the ice of the Bay of Quinte and elsewhere, especially with the recent mild spell.
Yesterday (Sunday) an all terrain vehicle broke through the ice on the bay around 5:30 in the afternoon.
The ATV ended up under water and on the bay’s bottom.
Luckily, the rider jumped off and was uninjured.
OPP offer the following advice to those wanting to go out on the ice.
- Go with an experienced, safety conscious guide who is familiar with local conditions. Do not travel on ice alone.
- Constantly scan the frozen terrain for signs of changing conditions.
- Do not travel over ice-covered water in early and late winter when conditions are more likely to be dangerous.
