Belleville Police Service responded to 70 calls for service from February 5, 2020 at 5 a.m. to February 6, 2020 at 5 a.m.
Domestic Disturbance
On February 5, 2020 at 11:30 p.m., Belleville Police responded to a north end business regarding a domestic dispute. As a result of the investigation a 21-year-old Belleville resident was charged with two counts of spousal assault, uttering threats to cause bodily harm and breach of probation. The accused is being held for a bail hearing on February 6, 2020.
Harassment
On February 5, 2020 at 5 p.m., Belleville Police were made aware of an incident occurring in the parking lot of the police station regarding an irate male yelling and acting aggressively. The investigation revealed that the male had been spoken to on multiple occasions regarding unwanted attendance and contact involving employees of a Belleville agency. As a result of the investigation, a 57-year-old male of no fixed address was charged with criminal harassment and mischief and was held for a bail hearing on February 6, 2020.
Warrant arrest
On February 5, 2020 at 11:18 a.m., a uniform officer was on general patrol in east end of the city when they observed a male who was wanted on an outstanding warrant for 11 domestic related charges. The 34-year-old Belleville resident was held for a bail hearing later in the day.
Spoof scams
Belleville Police continue to field complaints from local residents who have fallen victim to a known phone scam. Residents will receive phone calls from phone numbers associated to Ontario police services claiming that the resident owes thousands of dollars and that they are required to attend a location with Bitcoin machines to transfer funds to pay off the debt or they will be arrested. Fraudsters are “spoofing” these phone numbers making it appear that these calls are from legitimate locations, but in fact the call could be coming from anywhere in the world. Once the funds are put in Bitcoin form they are untraceable and unrecoverable. Do not respond to these nuisance phone calls. Legitimate phone calls from the Belleville Police Service will never demand the transfer of funds under the threat of arrest.
