About 50 brave souls slept outside in cardboard boxes on the night January became February.
The occasion was the 13th and final Sleep Out So Others Can Sleep In event run by the Canadian Mental Health Association Hastings and Prince Edward.
About 100 people showed up at the beginning of the night Friday to share stories and information about their experiences dealing with homelessness and mental illness.
Executive Director of the local CMHA Sandie Sidsworth said $12,000 had been raised with money still coming in.
The event’s proceeds will be split with the Grace Inn homeless shelter.
The CMHA will use its money to make repairs to its transition housing available to the needy in the community.
The local mental health association serves over 200 people regularly and offers counselling, housing, and life skill and employment training to help people regain stability in their lives.
Sleep Out Sleep In was held on the parking lot of the former Nortel building on Sidney Street in Belleville.
