For the second straight year, the Northumberland United Way has provided a $5,000 grant to Northumberland Food For Thought.
The funds are being used to enhance an online “food ordering system” that schools in Northumberland County have been using for more than a year to replenish supplies for their Student Nutrition Programs.
The programs consist of a full sit-down breakfast before school starts, a grab-and-go program, or one in which snack bins are delivered to each classroom.
These programs are free and voluntary, providing food to thousands of students in the area every day to ensure they are not hungry and distracted from learning in class.
Chairperson of Northumberland Food for Thought Kimberly Leadbeater says, “The online food ordering system features items such as eggs, bread, vegetables, fruits, cheese and milk that meet Ministry of Education nutrition standards for use in schools. Schools can order supplies at the click of a button, making it more streamlined and efficient to restock the shelves and cupboards of their Student Nutrition Programs. This means volunteers do not have to shop for food and have more time to spend on the program and with students.”
