Concerns over developer fees
Belleville set its 2020 fees for four of its departments Monday night, including the one that handles charges for developers.
Some members of council expressed concern that this would hamper development in the city, and questioned why it was done so late in the year.
Planning Chair Councillor Paul Carr tells Quinte News it should have been done in two steps, making it easier for a discussion on the fees.
Mayor Mitch Panciuk says that “If we are doing a better job in terms of customer service, making it easier to do business in Belleville, the problem with fees typically goes away.”
Commenting on the fact some fees are going up at a high percentage rate, Panciuk said subdivision and condo applications take a “considerable amount of staff time” and are increasingly complex.
Honouring the Medigas Classic
Belleville has paid tribute to the work on city parks accomplished over the years by the Medigas Classic.
Monday night, city council decided to dedicate the entrance to Zwick’s Park by naming it the Medigas Classic Parkway.
Mayor Mitch Panciuk tells Quinte News Medigas has given “more than a generation of fundraising and giving back to our community.”
Speaking of the playground equipment donated through Medigas, Panciuk says “they have not only donated things in the past but after they were worn out they even came back to replace them.”
He also pointed out that Medigas is “donating toward scholarships for students going to medical school who come back and serve the city.”
