The Highway of Heroes Tree Campaign and Forests Ontario have joined forces to pay tribute to soldiers of the Canadian armed forces, past and present.
The two agencies have joined forces in a tree planting campaign, to plant 1.8 million trees.
Through the campaign, tree planting subsidies covering up to 90% of tree planting costs are being offered to reforest properties that fall within the Highway of Heroes boundary.
That is approximately a 15 kilometre width along Highway 401 between Toronto’s Keele Street and Trenton.
Property owners with as little as one acre of open land may be eligible , though preference will be given to sites with 2.5 acres or more available. Campaign Executive Director Mike Hurley tells Quinte News the many stories of soldiers and Silver Cross Mothers is why they set out on this mission.
Highway of Heroes Tree Campaign Chair and Co-Founder Mark Cullen says, “Through this program, you could have a piece of the world’s largest living tribute. The Highway of Heroes Tree Campaign has over 100,000 trees planted between Trenton and Toronto.
The group is planting trees for all Canadians that have served during times of conflict since Confederation, eventually having 117,000 trees in the ground.
