Brighton council will consider how to approach next spring and what could be more serious flooding along its Lake Ontario shoreline.
At its meeting tonight (Monday), council will present a staff report describing a huge effort by municipal staff and firefighters to deal with flooding last spring, efforts that continued into the early summer.
Sand and sandbags were provided free and staff and firefighters physically helped residents protect their properties.
It’s estimated it cost taxpayers almost $100,000 to deal with the flooding and kept staff away from regular duties.
Staff says if the flooding gets worse this spring it could cost taxpayers around $150,000 if the response is the same.
So for this spring, staff is recommending that the municipality only provide sand and sandbags to residents free of charge and not offer labour as it did this year.
That option would only cost taxpayers around $30,000.
