The opportunity to participate in a free radon test for Quinte area homeowners has been extended to later this week.
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that you can’t taste or smell.
Hastings Prince Edward Public Health has launched a study to learn more about the levels of the gas in area homes.
Medical Officer of Health Doctor Piotr Oglaza tells Quinte News 650 homeowners have already signed up and there are 250 spaces remaining.
Dr. Oglaza points out that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer.
He says that if radon is found to be present in the home there are a wide range of interventions available.
The radon kit has to be in-place for three months and the results will be processed after that.
Oglaza expects it will be later in 2020 before the study results are known.
Homeowners interested in participating in the study are required to complete a survey application which will be available online until the end of the day on Thursday of this week.
