An east end Belleville resident appeared before the city’s Planning Committee Monday night with concerns about the proposed expansion of an elementary school in the area.
The project calls for a major addition to St. Joseph Catholic Elementary School, adding six new classrooms.
Area resident Doug Taylor told the committee he had concerns about the proposed parking lot near his area, also sewage and ground water in the buffer zone area.”I’m really afraid of water in the basement,” he said.
Taylor said he wants assurance the privacy fencing near his house would be satisfactory.
Committee Chair Paul Carr.
Another resident told the committee she didn’t understand why the school board would be changing the rules about the walkway on the west side of the property since it was city walkway. She noted a list of about eight or ten city walkways that didn’t have restrictions on them.
In an interview following the meeting, Carr said this might be something the city has to take a look at. He said it’s understandable the school board doesn’t want people on the school property after hours.
The Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board applied for rezoning of land the school now sits on.
The board hopes to demolish the current two-storey part of the school and build another two-storey, larger addition.
Staff will look at the issues raised and bring back a report at the next committee meeting.
